The Dell S2316H 23″ monitor is an elegant looking monitor with great performance if most of your computing needs are satisfied at a 1080p resolution. It is Dell’s offering for the price-conscious consumers who don’t want a quality viewing experience from a monitor without breaking the bank.
At the time of purchase in February 2016 this monitor was US$150, but I have seen it go for far less now that we approach the holiday season. Check latest prices here.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Dell’s S-series of monitors rank below their UltraSharp series and as such aren’t meant to be the flagship monitor from the company. You won’t find a 4K resolution in these monitors however, dell uses an excellent IPS panel (glossy finish) with a commendable 6ms response time (grey to grey) which makes this monitor great value for casual gamers.
The biggest attraction that most consumers will have in favor of this monitor will be the slim bezels of 0.5cm along the sides and the top. The bottom bezel is a bit thicker as the controls to adjust the monitor settings and the power button is housed there.
During my testing period, I have used this monitor to run several office and productivity applications such as the Microsoft office suite of applications as well as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Premier. I personally liked that the monitor came well calibrated out of the box which means I was not required to spend a lot of time tweaking the image quality to my liking. However, it should be noted that dynamic contrast was off by default and if you want to have it turned on at all time regardless of the mode it needs to be changed from within the display settings option. Personally, I think Dynamic contrast should always be kept on in this monitor as the image quality looks significantly better with it being applied.
The size of this monitor 23″ is perfect for an office setting and will exceed most productivity needs for most. I personally loved the “Paper” mode which adjusts the brightness and warmth of the display panel to a level that is very soothing for the eyes and ideal for long hours of work.
SOME ASPECTS THAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS MONITOR?
I love the “Game” mode this cranks up the power consumption of the monitor but automatically also turns on the Dynamic Contrast of the panel which makes games pop and look amazing. I should mention that when V-sync is turned on in some games such as Doom (2016) and Shadow of Mordor there’s a bit of screen tearing issue that crops up. Since not all games are optimized by the developers, in the same manner, I found the best gaming experience I have had in this monitor was with V-sync turned off for most games.
As a bonus the Dell S2316H 23″ also comes with 2 x 3W built-in speakers which won’t please an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination will be adequate for most. I have seen other manufacturers offer monitors that are of comparable quality with display panels in the same price range who don’t have this. Audio can be fed into the monitor’s speakers through the HDMI cable or the separate 3.5mm audio in port. If you want to connect external speakers to the monitor that can also be done through the 3.5mm audio out port.

There’s a lot to love about the DELL S2316H. Given the price point at which it comes it is a good choice for an office use or casual gaming. With the addition of the free HDMI cable, out of the box, the monitor comes ready to be used. If you are a fan of glossy finish and slim bezels you will fall in love with this monitor in no time.
As good as it may be there is room for improvement. In the next iteration, I would love Dell to add more than 1 HDMI input source so that I can have my PC and my PS4 both connected to the monitor. I personally think the VGA input while nice to have is a bit of a step back in 2016. Also, it should be noted that some might like a matte screen over the Dell S2316H’s glossy screen. For them, I would recommend the newer Dell SE2417HG which also happens to have 2 HDMI inputs and lower response time of 2ms. Another area of improvement will be the addition of swivel option at the base. But if I had to pick, my biggest gripe with this monitor is the lack of a VESA mount support at the back which prevented me from mounting it to the wall.
Overall I feel this is still a good monitor in its price range and will satisfy most people.
